Wood pallets are one of the best materials to use for your home DIY projects. Pallet wine racks are simple, rustic, unique and best of all – the material is free. This is a project which you can use for your own home or even an amazing housewarming gift.
One of my closest friends has made everything from tables and frames to a full outdoor couch using wood pallets, so why not a beautiful wine rack. With her in mind, I created this post with 13 different ideas for pallet wine racks.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials & Chose Your Design
The first step is to gather your material and decide which design you will build. This article shows 13 different pallet wine racks to help spark your imagination.
Step 2: Cut your pallet
Next, based on your design, cut your pallet. This is best done with a circular saw, but a hand saw will work just as well.
You will want to save the extra pieces of the pallet you are not using just in case you need finishing pieces to complete your project. To do this, you will need a prybar and hammer. Be careful of nails and splinters. Also, be gentle as you do not want to break any of the boards in two.
Depending on the design you chose, you may have to cut up some of the raw material to complete your design. Again, a circular saw or hand saw will work. If you are not wanting to do this on your own, you can always stop by a home improvement store and buy the size wood you would like to use and have them cut the exact size you need.
Step 3: Sanding
You will want to make sure and sand every inch of your wine rack. Pallets tend to be very rough which will leave the chance of splinters every time you reach for your wine glass, so make sure you sand thoroughly.
Step 4: Cutting Holes for your glasses
For this step make sure you know which wine glasses you would like to use for your pallet wine rack to make sure you can place each wine glass far enough apart so they do not touch. Mark each hole (1.5 inch in diameter) about 3 inches from the edge of the plank and separated wide enough for your specific glasses.
You can either drill out the holes using a drill press or a simple hand drill. You will then want to cut a small slot from the hole to the edge of the plank to allow you to store your wine glasses.
Step 5: Assemble your wine rack
Place all of your components together for your design. If you are using a standard pallet rack, using 3 inch screws will allow you to securely assemble your pallet wine rack. To make sure that the wood does not split, pre-drill all of your holes.
Step 6: Final Touches
This is where you let your imagination take control. Double check that you did not miss any areas that need a little more sanding to prevent any splinters. Lastly, paint, stain, distress, or just leave the pallet wine rack as is and enjoy the rustic decor.
Step 7: Hanging up your Wine Rack
Hanging up your masterpiece is very simple – just a couple screws. Make sure that you are screwing into at least two different studs to allow the wine rack to hold up all of your wine bottles. If you would like, you can always hang your wine rack as well, just make sure you are secured at a stud to support the weight.
